For the past 30 years, Dr. Gideon Groenewald and his family have delighted adventurers with their Clarens Dinosaur Hunting Expeditions, offering fossil tours and dinosaur footprint explorations across South Africa. Their most popular experience is the local Clarens tour to the Ash River, a memorable journey into prehistoric times.
Tours kick off at 9:00 a.m. with a short introduction at the fossil collection in Clarens. From there, participants drive (approximately 15 km on the Bethlehem road) in their own vehicles to the Ash River site. Though the road is good, low-profile cars are not recommended. Upon arrival, the group enjoys an 800-meter walk through the veld—an easy stroll, ideal for children and active seniors—while learning about the region’s ancient landscapes and the era when dinosaurs roamed here. The tour culminates at a large rock bed near the river, where an impressive collection of dinosaur footprints awaits.
Things to remember:
- Bring a hat and wear comfortable, closed shoes.
- Fees: Minimum group rate is R500. For groups of 3 or more, adults pay R200 each, children (5-16) pay R150, and children under 4 join free. Payment can be made by cash or EFT.
They also have a selection of dinosaur books and toys for sale!
